  • Stabilized energy levels

  • Smaller and less smelly poops

You may be thinking, “Won’t my dog want to eat people after eating raw meat?” No. That’s actually a common misconception. Your dog will not grow to enjoy human flesh. Here are actually some common myths you may have heard about raw food diets:

  • “Raw meat will makes pets bloodthirsty.” False. Dogs and cats are natural hunters, hunting is what they are designed to do. Kibble fed dogs and cats have been known to hunt and kill prey. There are breeds with higher drive to hun and kill prey - so some pets will naturally hunt a lot while others may never hunt. The food you feed your pet is not a determining factor if they will or will not hunt prey. Prey drive is determined by a combination of the breed, obedience training, and how you manage your pet’s behavior.

  • “Raw bones are dangerous because they splinter.” False. In fact raw bones are great for your pet and are totally safe! Raw bones are soft and are easy to digest in comparison to cooked or dehydrated bones. Both cooking and dehydrating bones removes the moisture from the bones which makes them hard, difficult to digest and splinter when eaten. Do stray from the weight barring bones such as femurs of cattle because those are to hard to properly chew even when raw.

  • “My pet will catch salmonella from raw meat” False. Salmonella can only survive in higher pH conditions (4-8+) and requires at least 12 hours to reach incubation. The hydrochloric acid in a carnivore’s stomach is a protective enzyme against pathogens. Their stomach is highly acidic (just about pH 1) while their digestive system is short and lacks complexity. Bacteria is killed when ingested and passed within 4-6 hours as poop. Since the time to complete digestion is very short, the bacteria does not stay in the body for long.

  • “Feeding cooked meat is better than raw.” False. Cooked meat lacks all the benefits of raw and it is deficient in essential nutrients because the very act of cooking destroys or alters proteins, vitamins, fats, and minerals in raw.
